The algorithm uses an 'area of interest' based approach and thus makes it possible to save parts of the image in different quality. It was developed to supersede the existing JPEG standards. JP2 is an image file compression algorithm that uses a wavelet compression algorithm. JPG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly those produced by digital photography. It enables the user to save the image with different parts having other image quality. As an image compression algorithm created as an advancement to its predecessor JPEG, the JP2 uses an entirely different approach towards image compression.
